English Pronunciation for Hindi Speakers

A practical Hindi-aware guide to English dental fricatives, v/w and stress, with short drills and honest limits.

Pick one contrast to try today: th, v/w, or the strong syllable in a word such as photograph. A small change in tongue position or timing may make your intended word easier to hear. Hindi and English organise sounds differently, but these comparisons are practice choices, not a way to identify anyone’s first language.

What can Hindi speakers compare?

English th is a fricative

For thin and this, air continues around the tongue. Replacing it with a dental stop changes the manner even when the tongue is near the teeth.

Practice : Alternate tin/thin and den/then. Hold the th briefly so you can hear continuous air.

Keep v and w apart

Hindi sources describe an approximant /ʋ/ whose realisation does not equal both English categories. That comparison makes vest/west worth checking, but it does not establish that an individual merges them.

Practice : Use a mirror: vest/west, vine/wine, very wary. Exaggerate first, then relax.

Move the stress

English word families can be used to check whether stress and vowel reduction remain clear in your own speech. Do not infer a fixed Hindi-to-English timing pattern from the language label alone.

Practice : Tap only the strong syllable: PHOtograph, phoTOGraphy, photoGRAphic.

Hindi, Hindustani and multilingual speech

Many Hindi speakers also use Urdu, English, or another regional language. Labels such as “South Asian accent” erase meaningful differences and are not exact language codes. WitAccent asks for a self-declared first language separately from any broad acoustic class.

Practise one contrast, then speak freely

Record one pair, then answer a short question using it in your normal rhythm. Listen for whether the sentence is understood, rather than whether it resembles one native standard. If the contrast helps, repeat it in tomorrow’s conversation.
